ScotRail passengers facing 'significant disruption' this weekend due to RMT strike action

Scots rail passengers face travel chaos this weekend with more strike action planned on the railways.

The RMT union strike action will cause a reduced rail service in Scotland over the next three days. Passengers will face significant disruption with only a limited number of train services operating on around a dozen routes across the country.

Cross-border services will also be significantly affected by the strike action and engineering works in North East England. Those services which are operating will run between 07:30 and 18:30, with passengers being asked to plan ahead and check their journey before travelling.

Network Rail say this will cause 'significant disruption' in Scotland.

Liam Sumpter, Route Director, Network Rail Scotland, said: “This strike will once again cause significant disruption to passengers, businesses and the wider community in Scotland.

“While we will do all that we can to minimise the impact and to get people where they need to be, passengers should only travel by rail if absolutely necessary.

“Please check your journey in advance as those services that are operating will finish much earlier in the evening.”

Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central will close much earlier than normal (19:00) on Saturday and services will start later than normal on Sunday.

Passengers can find more information about their journey by visiting National Rail Enquiries or checking with their individual operator.

If you're unsure who your train operator is, or if you'd like to find out more general information, visit National Rail Enquiries for more details.

The routes and services that will be in operation are:

  • West Coast Mainline – limited service
  • Edinburgh Waverley – Glasgow Queen Street via Falkirk High
  • Edinburgh Waverley – Helensburgh Central via Airdrie/Bathgate
  • Edinburgh Waverley – Cowdenbeath
  • Edinburgh Waverley – Glasgow Central via Shotts
  • Edinburgh Waverley – Tweedbank
  • Edinburgh Waverley – Larbert
  • Glasgow Queen Street – Larbert
  • Glasgow Queen Street – Falkirk Grahamston
  • Milngavie - Springburn
  • Glasgow Central – Hamilton/Larkhall
  • Glasgow Central – Lanark

Further industrial action on Monday October 10, by RMT members working for ScotRail, will mean only a very limited service will be available between 07.30 and 18.30 on the following three routes:

  • Milngavie – Edinburgh Waverley (half hourly service)
  • Glasgow Central – Lanark (hourly service)
  • Glasgow Central – Larkhall (hourly service)
