ScotRail launches new Veterans Railcard offering discounted travel to former armed forces

ScotRail has launched a new discount travel card to help former members of the armed forces across Scotland access cheaper fares, for themselves and a named companion.

Much-like other discount railcards available, this one comes with an annual fee, but offers big savings throughout the year, which could help you go further afield for less.

The Veterans Railcard offers savings of more than a third off train fares across Scotland and the rest of the UK for anyone who has served a minimum of one day in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve), or Merchant Mariners, who have seen duty on legally defined military operations.

The Veterans Railcard is easy to sign up for and costs £30 for one year or £70 for three years.

You can choose to have your card digitally loaded to the Railcard app on your mobile phone, or get it as a physical card, but you must always be able to show your railcard whenever you travel to be eligible for the discount.

The card entitles you to a 34% discount on Standard and First-Class Anytime, Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak and Advance fares - some time restrictions do apply so always check when you book your ticket.

You can travel anytime but a minimum fare of £12 applies Monday to Friday between 4.30am and 9.59am, excluding public holidays and during July and August.

ScotRail says you can enjoy the best savings when you travel Off-Peak.

Travelling on trains can be more fun when you go with someone else and with the Veterans Railcard, you can add a named companion when you make your application.

When you travel together, your companion can enjoy the savings too.

How do I qualify for the Veterans Railcard?

You only need to have served a minimum of one day in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve) or Merchant Mariners who have seen duty on legally defined military operations.

ScotRail guidance states that eligibility documents need to be provided at time of purchase.

Can I have more than one named companion?

ScotRail advises this can’t be done and that once your named companion is on your application, that is the only person who will also receive the discount.

It’s also worth noting that they only receive the discount when they travel with you, they cannot receive a discount when they travel on their own.
