Despite ScotRail timetables reverting back to May 2022 levels of service, the operator has urged customers to check their journeys due to the aftereffects of the heatwave. The return to full services today, July 20, follows the resolution of the pay dispute between ScotRail and the drivers union ASLEF.
However, travellers have been reminded to double check their journey due to knock-on disruptions from the recent record-breaking heatwave. Trains between Scotland and London were cancelled on Wednesday amid ongoing repair work.
Nearly 700 services will be introduced after a period of turmoil by the government-owned operator. A temporary timetable was introduced on May 23 after ScotRail drivers refused to work overtime and on rest days, leading to a slew of cancellations.
The train operator also stated that it is managing Covid absences amid the surge of infections in the country. David Simpson, the firm's Service Delivery Director, thanked customers for their patience during a "very challenging" few months.
He added: "I'd encourage customers to check their journey before they travel as our timetable returns to May 2022 levels, particularly given the disruption to services over recent days due to the extreme heat.
"We know how much people right across the country rely on rail travel, so we're pleased to increase the number of services."
Whilst ASLEF accepted ScotRail's improved pay offer on Monday, there will be further travel disruption next week and in August. National Rail strikes are set for July 27 and August 18 and 20.
Although ScotRail workers aren't part of the action, RMT members of Network Rail - including signallers who are vital to safe operations - will be striking. Only five ScotRail routes ran during similar action that took place in June.
Workers of LNER, the operator that runs the service between the west coast of Scotland to London, will also be taking action on July 30.
