Rail fares will be frozen until March next year under plans announced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
She unveiled the freeze after describing soaring energy bills as a "humanitarian emergency".
The move is contained in the Government’s new Programme for Government, which laid out their legislative agenda for the next session. The First Minster warned that the current economic situation - rampant inflation and energy bills poised to rise by 80 per cent - as the "most severe cost crisis in our lifetimes".
As revealed by the Daily Record, a rent freeze for tenants was also announced.
During her speech, the FM said: "I can announce that Scotrail fares will be frozen until at least March 2023. As well as rising energy bills, housing costs and increasing levels of debt are a concern for many.
"We do not control mortgage or general borrowing rates, but we will continue discussions to encourage banks and other financial services firms to take an approach that maximises security for homeowners and businesses."
