Scotland weekend heatwave verdict as Met Office forecasts stormy 33C weather in UK

As parts of the UK boil in temperatures as high as 33C, Scotland will be facing a deluge of rain this weekend.

While the Met Office says official heatwave criteria could be met in southern and eastern England, Scots will be donning waterproofs. The thundery showers down south will be avoided, but Scotland is expecting to see plenty of rain.

Warm, wet, and humid weather is in the cards this weekend as rain falls amid temperatures up to 25C. On Friday, the highest rainfall is expected in western Scotland and Northern Ireland and that theme is set to continue through the weekend.

The Met Office's latest update reports a "marked difference" between the UK's northwest and southeast areas. Scots should expect more bands of rain pushing northwest on Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures on Friday will remain warm as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness have highs of 20C.

Saturday will feel "quite humid", according to BBC Scotland Weather's Gillian Smart. The meteorologist says Saturday will be "very muggy" as temperatures reach 25C in Aberdeen, 24C in Glasgow, and 23C in Edinburgh.

It comes as the heat gradually builds across much of southern, central and eastern England this weekend. Temperatures are expected to rise above 30C in places and the mercury could even reach 32C or 33C somewhere in the southeast on Sunday.

"It's a marked contrast to those further northwest, who will see periods of rain move in from the west through the weekend," says Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Almond.

"Western Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to accumulate the highest totals, with possibly more than 40mm falling in some spots overnight on Saturday and into Sunday with some thunderstorms thrown into the mix, in what will be a largely unsettled weekend in the area."

The heat will give way in the south to "fresher" temperatures early next week.
