Scotland weather maps show snow blanketing country after -6C chill overnight

Scots are bracing for more snow after parts of the country saw flurries as temperatures dropped below freezing.

The Met Office had issued a series of weather warnings over the weekend, forecasting that ice and snow could cover parts of southern Scotland and cause problems on the roads.

The alert was originally only in place until 10am this morning, but has been extended until Wednesday as the bad weather looks set to continue. Scots should still take care when travelling as the wintry showers could mean the pavements and roads are more slippery than usual.

Across northern and northwest Scotland, the wintry conditions meant that temperatures dropped to a chilling -6C with snow flurries blanketing certain areas.

As this weather map from the Met Office shows, parts of the Highlands including Stornoway and Lerwick were hit by the snowfall with parts of the Central Lowlands being affected too.

Icy weather warning

The Met Office has extended its ice warning to last from 2pm on Sunday, January 15 until 10am on Wednesday, January 18.

During this time, snow showers and icy stretches could cause some disruption particularly in the north of the country.

The forecaster said: "Frequent wintry showers, mainly of snow, will feed into northern Scotland during this period.

"A few centimetres of snow are likely at low levels over a given 24 hour period, with the potential for 10-15 cm above 200 metres, especially across parts of the Highlands. Ice will be additional hazard, especially Tuesday night."

During the timeframe of the warning, the Met Office has warned of the following circumstances:

Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
