Scotland is set for sub-zero temperatures tonight as forecasters are warning of a freezing cold 'Arctic plunge'.
The mercury dipped to -2 in Aberdeenshire on Tuesday morning after a clear night as stargazers looked to the skies to see the Wolf Moon, the first full moon of the year.
Parts of the UK also woke up to a cold start and a dense fog weather warning in place, including England.
However, the outlook is for milder temperatures for Scotland and Northern Ireland where it is expected to avoid frost during the day - but chilly winds will make conditions feel cold.
Heading into Tuesday night, cloud and drizzle is expected as the Met Office warns a brief "Arctic plunge" could develop.
Forecaster Aidan McGivern said: “As we start off Wednesday because of the larger amount of cloud across the UK less widespread frost and fog but still some pockets in the south and north of that weather front.
“It (the front) does turn things colder as it moves south across the country, a bit of an Arctic plunge but only ever so brief because high pressure will be moving back in for the end of the week.
"Blue on the map is quite wide for the middle part of Wednesday as the weather fronts clear."
Another bout of heavy snow is also due up north before January ends, according to WX Chart.
Forecasters predict snow will fall on Friday, January 28.
The Met Office has also predicted snow for the first half of February.
The forecasters say there will be occasional snow falling between January 31 and Valentine's Day - February 14.
Their long-range forecast reads: "Into February outbreaks of rain and stronger winds are likely at times across the far north, whereas settled conditions are likely to persist in the south.
"Temperatures are looking to be slightly above average, particularly in the north however some colder interludes remain likely, bringing a risk of occasional snow, most likely over northern hills.
