Scots have been told to brace amid snow and ice yellow weather warnings for most of Scotland this week.

The Met Office has warned that snow and ice could cause disruption and make travel more dangerous.

The weather warnings are in place for the majority of Scotland and have been issued by the UK's leading meteorological society.

The weather warnings for Scotland are in place from Tuesday, March 14 to Thursday, March 16 with snow and ice also expected to hit Northern Ireland, Wales and Northern England.

What Scottish areas are affected by the Met Office snow and ice yellow weather warnings?

Here are the areas expected to be hit by snow and ice this week:

  • The Highlands and Islands
  • The Scottish Borders
  • Glasgow
  • Ayrshire
  • Dumfries and Galloway
  • Perth and Kinross
  • Moray
  • Aberdeenshire

'Power cuts' possible amid snow and ice weather warnings for much of Scotland

The snow and ice weather warnings this week are likely to cause disruption to road and railway journeys, creating longer travel times.

Areas like Orkney as well as some other rural places could suffer from power cuts while air journeys could be cancelled due to the bad weather.

Paths and pavements could become slippery, making accidents more likely.

What do the Met Office yellow weather warnings say?

Here is what the Met Office says about the snow and ice yellow weather warnings this week:

Tuesday, March 14

A snow and ice warning is in place for much of northern Scotland from 5pm until 10am the next day (Wednesday, March 15).

Glasgow and much of the southwest of Scotland will be affected by another yellow weather warning with this running from 11.45am to 4pm.

Wednesday, March 15

Snow and ice are set to move over the majority of Scotland with the warning in place from 4pm to 4am.

Thursday, March 16

The warning is set to remain over much of Scotland with Glasgow and Ayrshire experiencing another yellow weather warning for rain, potentially causing floods.

This warning will be in place from 12am to 3pm.
