Scotland to see Northern Lights as aurora borealis 'likely' over tonight's skies

Stargazers may be in luck this evening as the Northern Lights are set to illuminate the night sky.

A series of coronal mass ejection (CMEs) accompanies by a huge solar storm from the sun is set to light up out skies, according to the Met Office's Space Weather, increasing the chances of an aurora borealis show above Scotland.

In a Tweet on Wednesday, the Met Office explained that there is a growing chance of spotting the light phenomenon on Thursday night - April 20 - specifically as well as possible sighting on Friday. The forecasters added that the spectacular will be more likely visible if skies remain clear.

They said: "There is a growing chance of seeing the northern lights over the coming few nights, especially Thursday night.

"Aurora may be visible where skies remain clear across Scotland, as well as potentially as far south as Northern Ireland, north Wales, northern and central England."

Further, the Met Office's Space Weather group said on its website: "Activity is likely to reach Active to G1/Minor Storm levels on 20 or 21 Apr due to the anticipated CME arrival, with a chance of G2/Moderate or G3/Strong Storm conditions. The CME on 20/21 Apr is likely to lead to visible aurora across Scotland."

The weather is set to remain pleasant across much of Scotland throughout Thursday evening and into Friday. Sunny conditions and limited clouds in the sky make for perfect conditions ahead of the Aurora's arrival.

It means that the natural light display - more typically visible in high-latitude regions around the Artic and Antarctic - could be treating us.

It is not the first time the incredible light show has graced our skies this year, with Scots catching a glimpse back in February.

Thousands took to social media to share their snaps of the Auroras, with many more to come if things remain clear this evening.
