Scotland star Billy Gilmour set to clinch Napoli switch

Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour is poised to clinch a deadline day move to Serie A giants Napoli.

The former Rangers midfielder has been the subject of sustained interest from Napoli this summer as Antonio Conte looks to bolster his central options. Conte worked with Gilmour during their time at Chelsea and has now landed his man.

The Rangers Review understands a deal worth around £15million has been struck with Brighton and Hove Albion. Gilmour will finalise the switch before the close of business on Friday and put pen-to-paper on a long-term contract at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The move to Serie A almost collapsed this week after former Celtic star Matt O'Riley was crocked on his Seagulls debut in the EFL Cup tie with Crawley Town. Napoli have been persistent in their pursuit of Gilmour, however, and the 23-year-old will join international team-mate Scott McTominay in Naples this term.

McTominay has ended his long association with Manchester United to begin a new chapter on the continent and Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag admits it was difficult to bid farewell to the midfielder.

"It's a little bit mixed, I'm very happy for him," Ten Hag said. "It's also (a good deal) for us, but it is mixed because I wouldn't prefer to lose him because he's Manchester United in everything.

"He was so important for our team, for Manchester United, but unfortunately it's the rules. We have to discuss the rules, when you have to sell and obviously homegrown and academy players bring more value, that's not the right thing to do.

"But I think for everyone, for all parts it's a good deal, for Scott he's happy with it, for Napoli a very good player, but also for us."
