Scotland defender Aaron Hickey is edging closer to a return to competitive action before the end of the season, according to Brentford manager Thomas Frank.
The 22-year-old full-back has been sidelined since October 2023 due to persistent injury troubles, a major setback that not only hampered his club career but also forced him to miss Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign.
Hickey had began to establish himself as a key figure in Steve Clarke’s squad before his injury, and his absence was keenly felt during the tournament.
However, Hickey took a significant step forward in his recovery on Monday, featuring for Brentford’s Under-21 side in a 2-0 victory over Fleetwood Town. He was joined by teammates Rico Henry and Gustavo Nunes as all three players continued their rehabilitation.
Speaking ahead of Brentford’s upcoming fixtures against Newcastle United and Chelsea this week, Frank provided an update on their progress.

“Hickey, Rico, and Nunes all came through well, but it’s just too short for them to be involved in the Newcastle game,” Frank stated. “All three looked good and ticked the physical boxes."
Brentford will be eager to reintegrate the versatile defender into their squad as they approach the final stretch of the 2024-25 campaign.
Meanwhile, Scotland staff will be closely monitoring Hickey’s progress, with the national team gearing up for their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign later this year.
Given Scotland’s ambition to qualify for the prestigious tournament in North America, a fully fit and in-form Hickey could be crucial to Clarke’s plans. Anthony Ralston has served as his deputy, but the Celtic defender continues to see limited game time for the Hoops.
As Hickey continues his road to full fitness, both Brentford and Scotland supporters will hope his injury setbacks are behind him, allowing him to make a meaningful impact for club and country in the months ahead.
