Scotland set for hot spell as Met Office says temperatures to be 'well above' average

Scots are set to enjoy a spell of warmth and sunshine this weekend after weathering a spell of downpours and wind.

The weather will be warming up by the end of the week after fluctuating over the coming days. The latest Met Office forecast predicts people across the UK will enjoy above average temperatures for the season come Friday.

Despite the warm conditions, the weather will later grow "unsettled" with spells of rain, wind and a risk of thunderstorms. Two different weather systems will be duelling over the week and giving rise to blustery winds, reports the service.

In the latest forecast for the week ahead, Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin said: "Looking at the bigger picture, high pressure is to the north, low pressure to the southwest.

"And this week is going to be a bit of a scrap between these two weather systems. Eventually, the low will win out."

"The interaction between the high and low pressure will result in some windy days. Alex continued: "As the low squeezes up against the high, the isobars push together, suggesting at times it's going to be quite blustery".

Mornings will see possible overnight frosts and a blustery eastern wind will lend a chilly feel for some on Wednesday,

However, by Thursday, the southwesterly winds return and pulling warm air up from the near continent, allowing bands of heavy showers to push across the UK.

"There will be showers coming and going through the day. But, with a bit of sunshine, temperatures certainly in the southeast could be knocking on the door of 20 Celsius easily," Alex added.

"And elsewhere, temperatures still will be well above average because the air is still coming up from the south."

The Met Office's five-day forecast

Today:

Starting foggy for some, this clearing by mid, possibly late, morning. Good sunny spells for many, and feeling pleasant in light winds. Odd light showers in the far northeast. Cloudier and breezier in the far south and southwest too.

Tonight:

Many northern areas seeing clear spells and isolated fog. Elsewhere, turning cloudier and windier, with showery rain developing in places, and odd heavy bursts, possibly with thunder. Mild in south.

Wednesday:

Further showery rain, perhaps heavy and thundery, for southern and then also some central areas. Some brighter warmer interludes too. Gusty winds in the west. Dry in parts of Scotland.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain spreading northwards across most parts on Thursday and Friday. Drier in the south on Saturday but some rain in the north. Mild.
