Scotland set for FIFA rankings surge as Spain heroics earn Steve Clarke's team 'highest movers' tag

Scotland will be catapulted up SIX places when the next the FIFA rankings are published - meaning they will be the highest movers in the top 50.

Steve Clarke's team continued their steady upward curve with a pair of wins during the March internationals, including a famous Hampden night where they sent Spain packing. It was a major boost to their Euro 2024 hopes as they sit three points clear at the top of Group A and five ahead of Norway, who have been tipped as their main rivals to make the tournament with Spain expected to win the group before a ball was kicked..

The win over Spain was a massive upset as Scotland toppled a side ranked 32 places above them in the world rankings and it's gained FIFA recognition. When the governing body publishes the next rankings table, Scotland will move up to 36th, their highest position since Steve Clarke took over back in 2019.

That will put them above the likes of Russia and Czech Republic - who defeated Scotland at Euro 2020. Scotland's next opponent, Norway, will be ranked at 44th. Clarke took over in May 2019 when Scotland were in 44th place. They dropped to a recent record low of 53rd in October of that year and have made steady progress since. Scotland's best-ever ranking was an improbable 13th in September 2007 and the lowest was 88th just two years earlier before FIFA changed their system for calculating the places. They haven't been as high as 36th since May 2018.
