Scotland's nuclear bunker locations and what they are used for today

Most of us are very lucky as to never experience the threats posed by potential nuclear warfare in our country.

But fears have been heightened in recent days amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of its neighbouring country of Ukraine.

On the fourth day of fighting in the European country on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the country’s nuclear deterrent to be put on high alert amid growing tensions with the West.

A number of countries have imposed tough economic sanctions on Russia since the invasion started last week.

Previous fears over nuclear warfare lead to a number of bunkers being set up in the UK during the Cold War from the 1940s onwards.

More than 250 nuclear bunkers were erected in the UK - with at least 30 installed here in Scotland, according to Subterranea Britannica.

Many of them have now vanished as some fell into states of disrepair as nuclear tensions started to subside.

Others have been converted into the likes of luxury apartments and museums.
