Scotland's most popular baby names of 2022 as top spot changes for first time in 14 years

The most popular baby names in Scotland have been revealed with big changes in the boy category for the first time in over a decade.

The most popular name for a baby boy in Scotland has changed for the first time in 14 years according to the National Records of Scotland.

While Jack has been the most popular choice for some time, Noah has now taken over the top spot with 373 baby boys given the name in 2022.

The name has leaped from 8th place to 1st in the last four years.

For girls, Olivia has stayed put for the second year in a row. The name has been a long-term favourite holding the top spot in six of the previous seven years.

Isla comes in second for baby girls and has also been a firm favourite over the last few years.

The biggest rise in popularity for girls has been Nova which is now the 62nd most popular name up 73 places.

In the Glasgow City area, Grace is the most popular name for a girl while Muhammad is most often chosen for a boy. In East Renfrewshire, it's Sophie for a girl and Rory for a boy.

Inverclyde and North Lanarkshire have welcomed more Millie's and Leo and Noah's than any other names. In South Lanarkshire, Ava is the most popular choice for a girl with Jack top pick for a boy.

Other names have also seen a rise in popularity, with reality television being classed as a factor.

Luca has climbed 20 places to 5th place for boys since the appearance of Luca Bish on Love Island while the names of other Love Island contestants such as Millie, Arabella, and Kai are also being chosen more often.

The number of different names given to boys reached an all-time high in 2022, as did the number of unique names (not given to any other baby that year) for boys.

NRS Statistician Daniel Burns said: “NRS is happy to welcome all the new babies of 2022.

“A relative flood of Noahs in the last four years has saw the name leap from 8 th to 1 st .

“There are now so many more names in use, as parents aim for something more unusual, that it takes far fewer babies to share a name for it to be high up in the charts.

“Back in the 70s when David was the most popular name there were upwards of 1,700 babies a year with the top boys name. Since then fertility has declined, meaning there are fewer births, but with more names in use Noah can claim the top spot with 373 baby boys given the name in 2022.

Daniel added: “The latest figures also reveal a rise in names relating to nature , with Violet, Daisy, Ivy, Wren, Dahlia, Primrose, Oakley and River all rising. Oakley and River rose for both boys and girls."
