Scotland's most dangerous roads announced as Ayrshire region among top 10

An Ayrshire region's roads have been named among a Scotland's most dangerous areas for drivers, according to a car insurance company.

Research carried out by CarInsurance.ae has unearthed the country's most treacherous routes.

The study analysed Department of Transport data from 2013 to 2020 in all local authorities across Scotland, on the rate of reported road accidents per 1,000 people.

South Ayrshire is tenth on the list with neighbouring authorities in the East and North nowhere to be seen on the list.

South Ayrshire averaged 158 road accidents per year — translating to 1.41 accidents per 1,000 of the population.

Topping the list was Argyll & Bute with 170 road accidents per year, giving a score of 1.99 accidents per 1,000 of the population.

In second place is the City of Edinburgh, with 1.78 road accidents per 1,000 of its population. The capital city of Scotland has an average of 939 road accidents per year and 527,620 residents.

As well as housing the Gateway to the Highlands, Stirling is the third most dangerous area for drivers in Scotland. The city has a population of 94,080 and 156 road accidents per year. These figures give a score of 1.66 accidents per 1,000 residents.

Compared to the rest of Britain, however, Scotland is the safest area overall, with 1.32 road accidents per 1,000 of the population, compared with 1.51 in Wales and 2.05 in England. Meanwhile, London is the most dangerous area overall, with the highest rate of 2.76 road accidents per 1,000 of its population.

A spokesperson for CarInsurance.ae said: “It is interesting to see the difference in the number of reported road accidents across Great Britain, despite England, Scotland, and Wales all following the same Highway Code.

"According to the data, the roads of Scotland are considerably safer than those of London. Road safety is an important issue for everyone, whether you are a driver, passenger, or pedestrian, and this study reveals some fascinating facts on the safest areas for road travel.”
