Scotland player ratings as Nathan Patterson silences Everton naysayers with rousing return to form

Krzysztof Piatek's injury-time penalty gave Poland a late 1-1 draw with Scotland at Hampden Park.

In a hastily-arranged friendly match after the Scots' 2022 World Cup play-off semi-final against Ukraine was postponed until June, there was little between the teams until the 68th minute when Kieran Tierney headed in a free-kick from captain John McGinn for his first international goal.

It looked like the Scots were headed for a seventh successive win until the third of three added minutes when Irish referee Robert Hennessy judged Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon had fouled Platek inside the box and the substitute slotted in his spot kick.

Here's how the players rated

CRAIG GORDON

Moved into Scotland’s all-time Top 10 cap holders. Cherished clean-sheet looked to be preserved by Gilmour’s saving clearance until late penalty controversy. 7

NATHAN PATTERSON

Second start in four months and always positive with two strong first-half runs ending with shots on target. Third strike also saved and brilliant cross for header over from Christie. 8

SCOTT McTOMINAY

Good outlet with his composure on the ball and use of it. Escaped booking after crunching Moder with shuddering tackle. Bailed out by Gilmour’s clearance after only slip. 7

GRANT HANLEY

Strong defending and aggressive in the one-on-one jousts. Caught between two as Salamon nodded over. A danger at set-pieces and mostly solid as McTominay and Tierney stepped out. 7

KIERAN TIERNEY

Left-sided centre-back kept a tight grip down his side first-half. Caught too advanced as Piatek got into his channel. Precise header for a first international goal. 7

GREG TAYLOR

Sixth cap at left wing-back and a willing runner up and down the flank. Relieved after losing possession when Salamon missed. Replaced by Hickey at three-quarter mark. 7

BILLY GILMOUR

Composed and clever. Demanded possession. Deflected shot saved. Brilliant stealing of the ball and through pass almost set-up McGinn. Miraculous goal line clearance. Excellent. 8

CALLUM McGREGOR

Midfielder patrolled his area with polish as he moved it and covered team-mates defensively. High and wide with a good shooting opportunity before the break. Never flustered. 7

JOHN McGINN

Talisman was handed the captain’s armband. Shot blocked just before half-time and touch too heavy in a one-on-one in the second period. Wonderful free-kick delivery for Tierney goal. 7

RYAN CHRISTIE

Bournemouth playmaker operated just off Adams and fizzed a 20-yard first-half drive narrowly over the crossbar. Headed Patterson cross wide and worked so hard. 7

CHE ADAMS

Strong and plenty of movement up front as he came short and linked the game intelligently. Fierce shot from the edge of the box saved. 7

STEPHEN O’DONNELL 3
Took over from Patterson on the right for the final quarter.
AARON HICKEY 3
First cap for the Bologna defender and no problems.
RYAN JACK 3
Back for Scotland in midfield in place of Gilmour.

STUART ARMSTRONG 3
Plenty of drive within the engine room after replacing Christie.
KENNY McLEAN 3
Took up intelligent positions as Scotland tried to see it out.
JACOB BROWN 1
Stoke striker got the final seconds and second cap for Adams.
