Scotland manager Steve Clarke hoping for respectful tribute to The Queen

Scotland manager Steve Clarke

STEVE Clarke has expressed hope there will be no repeat of the disruptions which marred the tributes to Queen Elizabeth II this weekend at the Scotland game against Ukraine tonight.

The SFA yesterday revealed their will be a minute’s applause in honour of the late monarch before kick-off in the Nations League match at Hampden this evening.

The governing body received special permission from UEFA following discussions.

Similar shows of respect at cinch Premiership fixtures between Rangers and Dundee United at Ibrox on Saturday and St Mirren and Celtic at the SMiSA Stadium on Sunday were spoiled by crowd behaviour.

A group of United fans booed and chanted “Lizzie’s in a box” during a minute’s silence and Celtic supporters sang “if you hate the royal family clap your hands” when there was a minute’s applause.

Scotland will be bidding to atone for the Qatar 2022 play-off semi-final defeat they suffered at the hands of Ukraine and increase their chances of topping Group B1 and clinching a Euro 2024 play-off spot this evening.

Clarke stressed that he will join in with the applause before the encounter with the Euro 2020 quarter-finalists gets underway and stated that he hopes the tribute passes off without incident.

“I think for me I will do my usual and show the respect that should be shown on such an occasion,” he said.

“For other people? I don’t think it is for me to judge. But hopefully it goes off and it is a respectful moment before the game.”

“Like I say, I am always very respectful on these occasions and I give the respect that’s deserved.”
