Scotland has 13 of the UK's cheapest postcodes to buy property in - full list

New research has revealed the UK postcodes that are the most affordable to buy property in - and the top three are all in Scotland.

According to the annual Sellers Report from estate agent comparison site GetAgent, Scotland is home to 13 out of the top 20 cheapest postcodes to buy a house.

Greenock is the least expensive place in the UK to purchase property in. The study found that the average asking price in the Inverclyde town is just £64,699. The historic industrial town is approximately 25 miles west of Glasgow, and is known for its architecture and for being the site of the first dock on the Clyde in 1711 .

Notable attractions include the McLean Museum and Art Gallery, and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Museum and Heritage Centre, as well as the Lyle Hill Viewpoint that offers panoramic view across the Clyde.

Newmilns in East Ayrshire was found to be the second least expensive area of the UK to buy property in, with an average asking price of £69,049. The village has a population of around 3,000 people and is located approximately 25 miles southwest of Glasgow.

Rounding out the top five are Easterhouse in Glasgow, Kilbirnie in North Ayrshire, and Bradford City Centre, with average asking prices of £74,130, £78,110, and £81,610 respectively. The former two are located in Scotland, while the latter is in England.

Other destinations include Grimsby in North East Lincolnshire, Middlehaven in Middlesbrough, and Shildon in County Durham. All locations in the top 10 were found to have average asking prices of under £100,000.

GetAgent added: "Scottish locations truly dominated the top 20, with postcodes from the country spanning the rest of positions 11 to 19. All Scottish destinations included in the top 20 rankings had average asking prices as low as £97,500 and as high as just £110,500, with Ayrshire and Glasgow proving themselves as real hotspots for affordable properties."
