Scotland 'door still open' for Newcastle United star Elliot Anderson amid England tug-of-war

Scot Gemmill says the 'door is still open' for Elliot Anderson to represent Scotland under-21s despite the Newcastle United midfielder remaining unavailable for selection.

Gemmill named his latest squad for this month's doubleheader against Sweden and Wales, and Anderson was among those absent from the squad.

The 20-year-old has been capped by both Scotland and England, but is still wanted by the Three Lions despite making his Scotland under-21s debut against Belgium last summer.

Anderson withdrew from the Scotland under-21 squad prior to a friendly defeat against Iceland in November and asked not to be selected until he has decided on his international future.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding which nation he will represent, Gemmill says Anderson is welcome to return to the fold for Scotland.

"Nothing changed with regards to Elliot. The door is still open for him," Gemmill told the Daily Record.

Anderson's solitary cap for Scotland under-21s means that he will be cup-tied for England at the Under-21 European Championships in the summer. However, he would be available to play in any friendlies prior to the start of the next qualifying campaign in September.

He has made 16 appearances for Newcastle this season, and was handed his first Premier League start by Eddie Howe in a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in February.

Anderson impressed on loan at Bristol Rovers during the second half of last season - registering eight goals and five assists in 21 appearances to help inspire the Gas to automatic promotion in League Two.
