Scotland secured an astonishing victory to remain unbeaten in their EURO 2024 qualifying group, downing Spain by two goals to nil.
Scotland started brightly with the best of possession in the opening stages before a mistake by Pedro Porro allowed captain Andy Robertson to capitalise and send a ball towards Scott McTominay whose effort found the bottom corner to send Hampden in to raptures. Ryan Christie then sped at the heart of the Spain defence unchallenged but could only fire his effort agonisingly wide. The first half wasn't without drama as Robertson was involved in a flashpoint with Porro before Luis de la Fuente's side threatened from a few consecutive set pieces.
The first half was not without tempers flaring but Clarke's men led at the break. In the second period, McTominay proved the hero again as Kieran Tierney showed Dani Carvajal a clean pair of heels before crossing in to the area, the shot found its way to the midfielder who fired past Kepa for two nil to send Hampden Park rocking. The Scots held well under pressure and ended the game with a flurry much to the delight of the rampant capacity crowd.
McTominay the man
Scott McTominay once again proved to be the man of the hour when Scotland need him most.
The Man United star turned Saturday's Cyprus win in to a comfortable one with his late brace.
That was rewarded with a start against Spain and the midfielder was on top form.
Not just with his strikes, but energy and ability to win the ball from a Spain side who did dominate the ball at times.
40 years of hurt
Scotland last tasted triumph over the Spanish in 1984.
Mo Johnston and Kenny Dalglish were the heroes that day.
But Steve Clarke's side made their own piece of history by vanquishing the Spaniards in a superb showing under the lights.
One to remember for the Tartan Army. Astonishing.
Six points, no danger
Not only did Scotland produce a history-making win but the Scots are top of the EURO 2024 group.
Six points from six with arguably the hardest fixture of the campaign ending in a win.
And with Norway being held by Georgia, things are looking very positive in terms of the plight to reach Germany.
