Scot's unusual pancake topping branded 'illegal' by horrified Reddit users

With Pancake Day underway, those who take part will be covering stacks of the fluffy disks with a range of toppings.

When it comes to pancakes, there is no end of accompaniments to choose from and everyone has their favourites. From the classic lemon and sugar, to oozing chocolate spread with whipped cream and even savoury combos like ham and cheese, the possibilities are almost infinite.

Of course, everyone has different tastes in flavours, but one Scot has sparked a debate after asking for the Reddit community's thoughts on a more unconventional combination. Posting on the discussion forum, they asked: "My manager swears by cheese and jam on pancakes on Pancake Day, is this normal???", sharing a snap of a pancake covered in strawberry jam and three rectangles of white cheddar cheese.

While some said they would be happy to give it a go, others were a bit more extreme in their responses, even comparing it to criminal activity. One rather opposed comment read: "This feels unacceptable. Cheese with strawberry jam... I feel like that's worse than manslaughter," while a second said: "Normal? That's not even legal."

A third simply penned: "I am disgusted and appalled", while one person found the combination to be particularly emotionally distressing. You're breaking my heart, I'll mail you maple syrup from Canada, just stop the violence against these innocent cakes," they said.

On the other, less intense side of the scale, users highlighted that the dairy based food is often paired with fruits like apples and grapes. "Cheese and fruit go together very nicely, the texture might be weird, but I'd try it," read an open-minded comment.

Others came out in support of the pairing, saying they've enjoyed both of them together in other ways. One user said "Not tried on a pancake but its banging on toast," while a second reminisced: "No. But cheese and jam sarnies in 70’s Yorkshire were a thing I remember."

Some comments questioned whether this person's manager was from another country, citing that the combination is enjoyed in other nations like Norway and Sweden.

While people were both for and against cheese and jam on a pancake, the original poster revealed that most weren't for the combination. "After reading the comments so far it’s definitely depression on a plate," they wrote in conclusion.
