Schools forced to close after going without water for 24 hours in UK heatwave

Six schools were shut yesterday in Kent after a burst water pipe meant they were left without drinking water for more than 24 hours.

They remain shut today, and the council has said four more schools will also close their doors to pupils, due to the extreme heat and lack of water.

Problems began yesterday as the taps started to run dry following a fault in the main pipeline that carries the Isle of Sheppey's water from the mainland.

Kent County Council said all its buildings on the island had been shut due to the water shortages.

It said: "Schools, libraries, children’s centres, and the Sheerness Gateway will remain closed until supply is restored.

“We are working at pace with partners from the Kent Resilience Forum to support Southern Water in returning services to homes and businesses as soon as possible.

“We understand the concern this will cause members of the public and we are working with Southern Water and partners to ensure the most vulnerable are properly protected.”

Southern Water first tweeted: "We’re sorry again to everyone without water.

"It’s taking longer than expected to bring supplies back, due to a second burst we’ve been dealing with overnight."

But later added: "We've fixed the burst pipe on the Isle of Sheppey and are slowly starting to refill the network.

"This is to protect the quality of the water we're sending back to your taps.

"Before you head off to bed, please check all the taps in your house are turned off in case your water supply comes back while you are sleeping.

"However carefully we try to recharge the network, discoloured water from your taps is normal after a supply disruption.

"It's not harmful and will usually clear in 24-48 hours. But if you are still having problems after this, please give us a call on 0330 3030368.

"We're so sorry again for the inconvenience caused."

Frustratingly the problems have continued into today, the water company added at around 8am: “We’re really sorry again to everyone without water on the Isle of Sheppey.

“It’s taking longer than expected to bring supplies back, due to a second burst we’ve been dealing with overnight.”

Bottled water is being given out to residents and the company has brought in a fleet of six tankers to deliver water to the island’s three prisons and hospital.
