Schools And Colleges Closed In Russian Region Due To Attacks

Aftermath of a Russian missile attack in Odesa

In response to a surge in Ukrainian attacks on the territory, schools and colleges in parts of the Russian region of Belgorod will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. The governor of the region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, announced the closures, which also extend to shopping malls in the affected districts along the border with Ukraine, including the city of Belgorod.

The ongoing attacks have brought the war in Ukraine closer to Russians in Belgorod, who have been largely isolated from the conflict. Ukrainian Spy Chief Kyrylo Budanov revealed that Russians are involved in sabotage groups targeting the Russian regions of Belgorod and Kursk, which border Ukraine.

Despite the attacks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the attempts on the Belgorod and Kursk regions have been largely unsuccessful. Russian President Vladimir Putin is being regularly briefed on the situation.

Belgorod's governor, Gladkov, emphasized the importance of safety for all residents, particularly teachers, nannies, and technical staff who are understandably concerned. The closure of schools and colleges began last week with students engaging in 'days of self-learning' and was extended due to the escalating attacks.

Ukraine's intensified shelling and strikes on the Belgorod region have resulted in casualties, including two fatalities reported by Gladkov. Russian forces have successfully repelled attempts by Ukrainian fighters to infiltrate Russia, according to the Defense Ministry.

Local residents have shared videos on social media showing explosions and fires caused by Ukrainian strikes in Belgorod. The situation remains tense, with reports of cross-border attacks and heavy drone strikes in the region.

As voting continues in Belgorod for the presidential election, authorities have arrested individuals for acts of civil disobedience. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has spilled over into the Belgorod region, leading to casualties and widespread disruption.
