Parents banned from school sports day

Heartbroken parents have expressed their upset at a primary school's decision to ban them from attending their children's sports day.

Broad Square Primary School in Norris Green caused a stir after it announced parents would not be allowed to attend its sports day this week due to 'risk reasons'. The news left parents and children upset and disheartened, with many questioning the school's reasoning.

One anonymous mum, who lives close to the school, said her daughter had been left devastated by the announcement.

She said: "My child has not taken the news very well. She keeps asking me why I can't go, and that it's not fair to her.

“It's the only time we are allowed to go into the school to do things with our children and support them. Other than that, it is only parents' evening. It's totally disheartening for the children who want their parents there."

The mum added she could even hear the children cheering each other on from her house and that it was "heartbreaking" for her to miss out on her daughter's special day.

The mum also expressed her disappointment in seeing other parents celebrating their child's sports day at different schools.

She continued: "All the other schools have been having sports days, and I've been seeing it on Facebook, and everyone is cheering their children on. It's just a bit disheartening for parents who are looking forward to seeing their children. We've been through some difficult years through Covid, but we're not in Covid times anymore."

A Broad Square Primary School spokesperson said: “This year we took a decision to make school sports day an event that was focused entirely around our pupils, ensuring that it was fully inclusive.

"This was partly to avoid inconveniencing parents should it have to be cancelled due to inclement weather. This approach has been adopted by many schools across the city. It was a great success and our pupils thoroughly enjoyed it. The vast majority of parents and carers understood and we have only had one complaint."
