Schoolboy taken to hospital after car and van crash

A 13-year-old boy was taken to hospital after a crash involving a car and a van.

Emergency services were called to Bowring Park Road in Childwall at around 6.30pm on Sunday (May 21). Merseyside Police, Fire & Rescue and North West Ambulance Service attended the scene, while an air ambulance landed on the nearby King George V Playing Fields.

A black Volkswagen Tiguan and a white Mercedes Sprinter had been involved in a crash. A 13-year-old boy was taken to hospital with a broken arm.

Residents on the road told the ECHO they had never seen such a large emergency service response. One man, who had been out walking his dog, said: "I didn’t see the crash but have never seen this many ambulances. There were at least four here on the road and the air ambulance landed on the King George V Playing Fields."

Debris was littered across the road following the crash. The roof of the car had been cut off by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) and had been discarded on a grass verge by the side of the road.

The road was closed for hours. North West Ambulance Service checked casualties over while fire crews stabilised both vehicles. Fire crews then removed the roof of the car using hydraulic cutters and the two remaining occupants were lifted out and taken to hospital.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact @MerPolCC on Twitter or ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’ on Facebook with reference 901 of 21 May.
