A weapon was discovered in a student’s bag at Lexington’s Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School Friday morning. Fayette County Public Schools Police took immediate possession without incident and took the 17-year-old male student into custody. Schools Police Chief Martin Shafer said there’s nothing to indicate the student planned to use the gun at school.
“There’s no indicators or any evidence discovered that there was an intent or that the firearm was to be used on this campus or any other campus in Fayette County,” said Shafer.
The student is being charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property, receiving stolen property-firearm, trafficking in a controlled substance in or near a school, and possession of a firearm by a minor.

“As a father myself, I know it is never easy for a family to hear that there’s a gun on campus and it’s unfortunate what happened and exactly why such a strong focus is being placed on school security and our community and our safety protocols in general,” said Liggins.
This is the third similar incident this school year in Lexington. A gun was discovered in a vehicle at Frederick Douglas High School and a gun was found inside a student bag at Henry Clay.
