A school in Stalybridge has issued a heartfelt tribute after a pupil tragically died after 'getting into difficulty' in water earlier this week. The teenager, who was named on Thursday as 14-year-old Lucy Smith, lost her life in water just off Crowswood Drive in Stalybridge on Monday night (August 15).
Specialist search crews rushed to the scene but her body was recovered from the water overnight. Tributes, cards and balloons have been left at the waterside in recent days, along with teddies, as well as a sign that said 'RIP Lucy'.
Copley Academy, in Stalybridge, issued a public statement on Thursday evening. They also urged any of their pupils struggling the death of the pupil to contact them for support.
In a statement, they said, "Copley Academy are aware of the devastating news that a young member of our academy community sadly lost their life after getting into difficulty in open water on Monday evening. We want to offer our deepest sympathy to all of those involved in this tragedy.
"Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families, friends and local community at this extremely sad time. We would like to offer support and the support of a specialist team. To access this support or if you need anything else please let us know. Email mail@copleyacademy.org.uk."
After the incident, Greater Manchester Police and the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service reiterated warnings for people not to swim in open water.
