Manquillo switched off, Shelvey uncomfortable: Tottenham 5-1 Newcastle player ratings

Newcastle United suffered a nightmare second half, as they slumped to a heavy defeat at Tottenham. The Magpies started brightly, with Allan Saint-Maximin winning a free-kick on the left, although Matt Targett's cross was easily defended.

Tottenham then took a grip on the game to dominate possession, although long-range efforts from Harry Kane and Eric Dier were all they had to show for their efforts. Joe Willock then did well to create a chance, but his effort was well blocked by Cristian Romero.

Eddie Howe's side grew into the match as the half wore on, and took the lead on 38 minutes through Fabian Schar. The Swiss defender fired in a free-kick which Hugo Lloris perhaps should have done better with, but the 3000 away supporters were sent into raptures.

The lead didn't last too long however, as Spurs levelled minutes later. Son's corner wasn't cleared and Ben Davies headed home the second cross to make it 1-1.

Spurs took the lead early in the second half when Matt Doherty got on the end of Harry Kane's cross at the far post. Chris Wood almost immediately replied, but fired wide. The home side then made it 3-1 when Kulusevski rolled the ball across the box to Son to score. Emerson Royal then made it 4-1 when he got on the end of Doherty's cross the turn the ball past Martin Dubravka.

To rub salt into the wounds, Spurs added a fifth Bergwijn broke through to fire home. Here's how Lee Ryder rated the Newcastle United players.

Martin Dubravka 5

Faced up the majority of Spurs pressure in the first half. Left totally exposed after the break. One of his toughest days at United.

Javier Manquillo 3

Taken off at 3-1. Watched on as Doherty put Spurs ahead. Switched off. He can't have any complaints.

Fabian Schar 5

Blotted copybook after losing ball for second decisive goal which set tone for second half.

Dan Burn 5

A booking and some tough moments. Has been brilliant previously but this was hard day at the office.

Matt Targett 4

Could not live with Kulusevski with the Sweden star finding pockets of space and inflicting damage.

Joelinton 5

Taken off on a yellow card. Battled hard but was in danger of dismissal.

Jonjo Shelvey 4

Didn't look comfortable with defensive role. Never really got going.

Joe Willock 6

At least offered some spark to win free-kick.

Ryan Fraser 3

Caught between two stools. No answer to Doherty's overlapping runs.

Allan Saint-Maximin 4

Caused problems in the first half and won free-kicks. Went missing after the break.

Chris Wood 5

Did not get much service. Hooked after spending second half as spectator.

Subs

Bruno 6

For Manquillo 59. Offered some composure but it was too late.

Jacob Murphy 3

For Joelinton, 59. No impact.

Jamaal Lascelles 4

For Wood, 70. Stood off for fifth goal. A tough ask to be thrown on at 4-1 down.
