Schalke have confirmed they will remove the logo of Russian energy giant Gazprom from their shirts with immediate effect following events in Ukraine.
The Bundeslinga club have taken the decision following the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, which began in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Gazprom are majority-owned by the Russian government and are also major sponsors of UEFA, European football’s governing body.
In a brief statement, Schalke said: "Following recent developments, FC Schalke 04 have decided to remove the logo of main sponsor GAZPROM from the club's shirts. It will be replaced by lettering reading ‘Schalke 04’ instead."
UEFA have called an extraordinary meeting of their Executive Committee on Friday morning, where it will be confirmed that the Champions League Final, which was due to be held at the Gazprom Arena in St. Petersburg on May 28, is to be moved.
One member of the Executive Committee is Alexander Dyukov, the president of the Russian FA and chairman of the management board of Gazprom Neft, a subsidiary of Gazprom.
