Scene of devastation after huge blaze at Newcastle high-rise flat sparked by toaster

This is the devastating aftermath of a fire in a Newcastle flat which was caused by a toaster.

Firefighters were called to a high rise building on Portland Road, in Shieldfield, at around 7.12pm on Tuesday after a fire broke out in the kitchen of the fourth floor flat.

When crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene they used thermal imaging cameras, breathing apparatus, ram fans and high rise hose jets to extinguish the blaze.

A spokesman for TWFRS said: "It was reported to us that there was a kitchen fire at a high rise building in the city centre and so crews were immediately deployed to the scene.

"Thankfully no one was believed to be injured in the fire and everyone at the property was accounted for.

"We want to say a huge thank you to our crews and fire control for their rapid response to the fire."

The spokesman said the cause of the fire is believed to have been a kitchen appliance.

He said: "They believe it could have been started by a toaster so it's a lesson to us all - don't leave our appliances unattended and make sure you clean out the breadcrumbs from your toaster."
