The nationwide travel subsidy program that ends Dec. 28 will be restarted Jan. 10, 2023, the government has announced.
The travel support measures to stimulate tourism demand will be slightly different next year, the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry said Tuesday.
The current 40% discount rate will be reduced to 20%, with the maximum total discount granted to travelers also lowered from 11,000 yen to 7,000 yen. This includes shopping vouchers that can be used at restaurants and shops.
For overnight vacation packages including public transportation, the maximum discount per night will be lowered from 8,000 yen to 5,000 yen. For day trips, the amount will fall from 5,000 yen to 3,000 yen.
Weekday travelers will receive 2,000 yen in shopping vouchers per night, down from the current 3,000 yen. Per night on weekends and holidays, the voucher will remain at 1,000 yen.
