Fire crews in New York City responded to a scaffolding collapse early Monday morning, resulting in three individuals being transported to the hospital. The incident occurred at 245 West 29th Street in Manhattan at 8:17 a.m.
The building, located in Chelsea not far from Madison Square Garden between 7th and 8th avenues, houses a French restaurant, wardrobe supply, and photography business. Google Maps images show scaffolding present at the site.
According to the FDNY, there were no issues with the stability of the building. A deputy chief at the scene described the collapsed structure as a 'sidewalk shed.'
Footage from the scene depicted debris scattered on the sidewalk and street, with emergency crews working to secure the area.
Deputy Chief Michael Varvels reported that two of the injured individuals were taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition, while the third was in critical condition.
Varvels indicated that the collapse of a 40-foot section of the scaffolding was believed to have been caused by a box truck colliding with the sidewalk shed. The New York Police Department will be conducting further investigations into the incident.
