SC stays Himachal Pradesh HC order stalling Gaggal airport expansion

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed a Himachal Pradesh High Court order that stalled the Gaggal airport expansion project.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud froze the High Court order of January 9.

The High Court had ordered status quo on the project in Kangra district till February 29.

The High Court order had been based on a plea filed by members of the Gaggal Airport Expansion Affected Society Welfare Committee.

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the government authorities, said of the three airports in Himachal Pradesh, the one in Kangra was the only facility where expansion was a possibility.

The High Court order had stalled the project despite assurances that there would be no displacement or dispossession.
