Save £300 on your supermarket shop with cashback accounts

Woman paying with bank card at supermarket till.

Saving money on your weekly supermarket shop is a must for most households as food prices have soared by over 18% within the past year.  If we don’t change our supermarket shopping habits, we can expect to pay an extra £800 a year for the same trolley load, according to Kantar.

With food inflation rising at over 18% , many of us are looking for ways to save money on our weekly shop whether that’s making use of the best supermarket loyalty cards or cashback offers.

When it comes to the prices on the supermarket shelves – even the price of some basic foods have gone up by over 100% according to consumer group Which?   It monitors thousands of food and drink prices across eight supermarket chains on a regular basis for its food and drink inflation tracker and found some items including breakfast cereals have gone up by a whopping 129% in the past year.

According to Nimblefins, a family of four in the UK spends an average £559 on a monthly food shop, equating to around £150 per week.

Here, we reveal some of the banks, credit cards and cashback offers to help you save money on your shop and how much a typical household could save.

Supermarket cashback current accounts

Chase: 1% cashback

New and existing Chase current account holders can take advantage of 1% cashback when buying their weekly food shop. But there are some caveats and terms differ according to when you applied for your account.

If you applied for your current account on, or after 9 May 2023, you will get:

  • 1% on the first £1500 of eligible spending each month.
  • This means you can earn up to £15 a month on your everyday debit card spending which includes your supermarket shop.
  • This cashback offer is capped at £15 per month, so the most you can save in a year through cashback is £180.
  • To get the full £15 per month, you would need to spend £1,500 per month on your food shop which means £375 per week.
  • However if you’re trying to cut down on spending, you’ll be looking to spend less, not more on your weekly food shop, so £1,500 a monthly seems quite unrealistic. It’s not worth maximising your spending to get the full £15 per month, however if you have a Chase account, you should still use it to get cashback on the amount you have spent. The average family of four spends around £150 per week on a food shop, so you would still get £1.50 cashback per week which means £6 per month and £72 over a year.

If you applied for your account before 9 May, then you will still get 1% cashback on everyday debit card spending for the first 12 months and the £15 cashback limit doesn’t apply.

Revolut: 2% cashback

Revolut is a little different from your typical bank card, it’s free to have and all you need to do is use your Revolut card when you pay for your food shop. The latest 2% cashback offer ends on 17 May 2023.

  • The cashback is capped at £10 for the time that the offer is around (until 17 May). You are only eligible for this cashback offer if you have a Revolut card and you have received an email about this offer from them.
  • You need to use your card for grocery spending at any of the major supermarkets – including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Lidl, Aldi, Co-op, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Spar.
  • The average family of four spends around £150 on a weekly food shop, however to earn the full £10 monthly cashback, you would only need to spend £125 a week.
  • However other cashback offers may be better if you can save a bigger amount over the course of a year as the Revolut offer is only running for a limited time.

Can I use all of the offers if I hold all of the current accounts?

Technically you can get the cashback offer with both of these if you hold a Chase and Revolut card.

The only catch is, you only get the cashback if you spend on that bank card.

This means you’d need to spend £375 a week with the Chase account to get the maximum £15 monthly cashback plus £125 a week with Revolut to get its maximum £10 cashback. This means spending a total of £500 a week on your food shopping to get £25 a month in cashback.

Other cashback offers

If you don’t have any of the above current accounts, there are other ways to get cashback on your supermarket shop.

Topcashback

Cashback app Topcashback has offers that can save you up to £12 off your supermarket shop including:

  • Up to £10.50 cashback at Sainsbury’s
  • Up to £12 cashback at Asda
  • Up to £8 cashback at Tesco
  • 4% cashback at Aldi
  • Up to 3% cashback at Iceland

Check these offers as soon as you can as some are exclusive and aren’t around for long. Look at other top cashback sites like Quidco and Cheddar to see what you can save and it’s also worth checking what’s better, using cashback sites or cashback current accounts

Supermarket loyalty schemes

Some of the best supermarket loyalty schemes offer cashback from time to time. To know when these offers come around, it might be an idea to download a supermarket loyalty app, for example, the Lidl Plus app or the Asda Rewards app.

Get £20 off your Asda shop with an Asda credit card

If you open an Asda Money credit card or Select credit card by 4 July, you can get £20 in Asda Pounds to spend in store or online.

It’s free cash, but not cash in your hand, as the Asda Pounds are credited to your Asda Cashpot, part of its reward scheme, that can then be used when spending in store or online.

You will also earn 1% cashback on Asda spending with these cards, including fuel and 0.3% in cashback on spending outside Asda.

In order to get the £20 – there are a few conditions to fulfil. Qualifying conditions include the fact you must spend at least £50 on the card, and set up a direct debit within the first sixty days of opening the account.

Providing you stick to the terms and conditions, the £20 will be credited to your Asda Rewards cashpot within 90 days of the account being opened, but may be sooner.

There seems to be nothing in the terms and conditions to stop you applying for the card, making an initial purchase, paying it off via direct debit, bagging the £20 and then closing down the account.

However, if you’re going to do this, make sure you’ve got the £20 in Asda Pounds in your cashpot first.

But, before you opt for this make sure you only apply for a credit card if you can afford to pay off your balance in full each month as interest rates with these cards are 25.9% for the credit card and 34.9% for the Select card.
