Saudi Shura Council signed two memoranda of understanding (MoU) with the two chambers of the Moroccan parliament aimed at providing a framework for boosting cooperation and interaction.
A statement by the Moroccan Council of Advisors announced that the MoU was signed by Speaker Al-Naam Mayara and Chairman of Shura Council Abdullah al-Sheikh, noting that it stems from the desire to bolster bilateral ties and the need to strengthen parliamentary interaction in areas of interest. It helps enhance mutual trust and understanding, expands consensus, and enhances cooperation.
The memorandum of understanding encourages the exchange of parliamentary delegations, activating the work of parliamentary friendship committees and promoting close interaction between its members to promote parliamentary aspects of common interest.
The document also provides regular cooperation and dialogue between the two councils on security issues, combating terrorism and extremism, and geo-strategic developments in the Middle East and North Africa.
It also addressed other areas, including culture and religious affairs, economy and investment, food security, and combating climate change.
Mayara and Sheikh held talks before signing the MoU, discussing bilateral relations and ways of enhancing them. They praised the strength of the distinguished ties based on cooperation, solidarity, and respect between the two kingdoms.
The two sides highlighted that these relations stem from the solid and close fraternal ties between King Mohammed VI and the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and between the two brotherly Moroccan and Saudi peoples.
The two sides also affirmed the common desire to promote cooperation between the two legislative institutions to serve issues of common concern, especially in light of the current regional and international challenges.
They also asserted the need to intensify coordination and consultation between the parliaments in various regional parliamentary forums.
Furthermore, the Shura Speaker signed an MoU with the Moroccan Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, that serves as a framework for cooperation and continuous interaction between the two chambers.
A statement by the House of Representatives stated that this memorandum aims to establish a mechanism for the annual visits of speakers, encourage the exchange of parliamentary delegations, establish joint working groups, and consolidate relations between their members. It also addresses parliamentary issues and aspects of common interest.
The memorandum covers security affairs, the fight against terrorism and extremism, geostrategic, cultural, economic, commercial, climatic, and religious developments, investment, food security, development of human rights, scientific research, and technological advances.
The two Speakers agreed to encourage technological and scientific innovation to improve information and communication technologies, work together to advance “e-parliamentary” action, and cooperate in developing the skills of parliamentarians and human resources.
They also agreed to organize conferences and seminars jointly and symposia to promulgate laws, assist parliamentarians in matters of legislation, parliamentary research, and analysis, promote the participation of women, and develop the technical skills of parliamentarians and staff.
Cooperation between the two institutions also includes other areas related to parliamentary action and legislation, such as parliamentary services, general research, and the exchange of expertise in the field of studies, data, and parliamentary information.
Alami met with the Sheikh and the Saudi ambassador in Rabat. The meeting addressed the distinguished relations that unite the two Kingdoms, stability, territorial integrity, and their shared desire to enhance cooperation between the two legislative institutions.
