Saudi Film Industry Thriving With International Collaborations And Local Initiatives

Production facility is seen at Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oilfield in the Empty Quarter

Charlene Deleon-Jones, the executive director for Film AlUla and Saudi Tourism leadership board member, recently highlighted the success of 'Norah,' the first Saudi film to be selected for Cannes' Un Certain Regard section. The indie film, shot in AlUla, features an all-Saudi cast and crew, showcasing the talent and beauty of the region.

Deleon-Jones emphasized the universal appeal of 'Norah,' attributing its success to the heartfelt storytelling and human connections portrayed in the film. She also noted the importance of showcasing a diverse range of stories and mediums in Saudi cinema.

With the recent opening of film studios in AlUla, the industry is gearing up for large-scale productions, including upcoming projects by Stampede Ventures. These studios, designed with green initiatives in mind, aim to promote sustainability in filmmaking.

AlUla is also expanding its creative initiatives, with renowned figures like Nicola Formichetti joining as mentors to support emerging talent. The development of music studios and training programs for local individuals further demonstrates the commitment to nurturing a thriving creative community.

Collaborations with organizations like Red Sea Film Foundation and plans for international co-productions, such as a Chinese-Saudi film with a diverse cast, highlight the global reach of AlUla's film industry.

Despite recent challenges, including the arrest of a key figure in the Royal Commission for AlUla, the film industry in AlUla remains resilient and continues to forge ahead with its ambitious projects.
