Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority Chairman Plans Boxing Revival

Canelo Alvarez looks happy

Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority chairman, Turki Alalshikh, is making waves in the boxing world with his ambitious plans to revitalize the sport. In a recent interview, Alalshikh expressed his commitment to fixing what he perceives as a broken industry by injecting new life and excitement into boxing.

Alalshikh's foray into boxing began with the successful hosting of major events in Saudi Arabia, including the Anthony Joshua-Ruiz rematch and the Tyson Fury-Francis Ngannou fight. His upcoming card on August 3 in Los Angeles, headlined by Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov, promises to showcase the Kingdom's dedication to promoting boxing with a star-studded lineup.

One of Alalshikh's key strategies is to offer competitive undercards, a concept borrowed from the UFC, to enhance the overall boxing experience. The August 3 card features a deep roster of fights, including Isaac Cruz vs. Jose Valenzuela and Tim Tszyu vs. Vergil Ortiz Jr., among others.

Alalshikh's vision extends beyond individual events, with plans to create a series of interconnected fights that build on each other. He aims to establish a strategic framework that will elevate the sport and attract a wider audience.

Looking ahead, Alalshikh has a lineup of high-profile fights scheduled, including the Fury-Usyk undisputed heavyweight championship bout in May and the Beterbiev-Bivol light heavyweight showdown. He also has his sights set on potential matchups like Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford in the U.S. and a showdown between American and U.K. fighters in December.

Alalshikh's innovative approach to boxing has garnered attention and raised questions about the sport's traditional strongholds like Las Vegas and London. However, he remains focused on delivering top-notch events both in Saudi Arabia and internationally, with plans to expand into markets like Shanghai and Berlin in the coming years.

With a commitment to long-term success and a dedication to collaboration with all stakeholders, Alalshikh is poised to make a lasting impact on the boxing world. His efforts to commercialize and elevate the sport demonstrate a deep understanding of the evolving market dynamics and a determination to position boxing for continued growth and success.
