Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez has completed a move from Manchester City to Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahli on a contract that will run until 2027, as confirmed by both clubs on Friday.
Although the exact financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, British media outlets reported that the Premier League champions, Manchester City, have agreed to an offer from Al-Ahli worth 35 million euros ($38.53 million), with an additional five million euros in potential add-ons.
Mahrez, who has been an integral part of Manchester City's success in recent years, will now continue his football journey in the Saudi Arabian league with Al-Ahli. The move signals a new chapter in the career of the talented Algerian winger, and fans will be eager to see how he performs in his new club.
"To play for Manchester City has been an honour and privilege," Mahrez said in a statement. "I came to City to win trophies and enjoy my football and I achieved all that and so much more.
"I have had five unforgettable years with this football club, working with unbelievable players, fantastic supporters, and the best manager in the world...
"Manchester City will forever be a huge and happy part of my life."
Mahrez had an impressive stint with City, scoring 78 goals and providing 59 assists in 236 appearances across all competitions. He was an integral part of the team's success, contributing significantly to their 11 trophy wins, which included five Premier League titles, after joining from Leicester City in 2018.
However, the 2020-2021 season saw a slight reduction in his playing time under Pep Guardiola, as he scored 15 goals in 47 games. Unfortunately, he missed out on playing in the FA Cup and Champions League finals, even though City managed to secure a historic treble during that period.
Despite the slight decrease in his role, Mahrez signed a contract extension with City last year, committing to the club until 2025.
Now, the 32-year-old Algerian winger is set to embark on a new chapter in his career with Al-Ahli. In his new team, he will be joined by Senegal's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who recently made the move from Chelsea to Al-Ahli as well.
Mahrez's move to Al-Ahli marks a significant transfer in his career, and fans will be curious to see how he adapts to his new surroundings and continues to showcase his skills on the field.
City could also part with another midfielder as Portuguese international Bernardo Silva has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia with Al Hilal, according to British media reports.
The Saudi Pro league has become an attractive destination for Europe-based players since Cristiano Ronaldo moved to Al Nassr in January.
