Sauce Gardner, the standout cornerback for the New York Jets, has once again solidified his status as one of the best in the league. In a recent preseason survey conducted by The Associated Press, Gardner was voted as the NFL's No. 1 cornerback for the second consecutive year.
A panel of eight AP Pro Football Writers ranked the top five players at the cornerback position based on their current status entering the 2024 season. Gardner received five first-place votes, highlighting his exceptional performance on the field.
Known for his elite coverage skills, Gardner allowed just 31 catches and one touchdown on 55 targets last season. Quarterbacks had a mere 80.3 passer rating when throwing in his direction. Despite not recording any interceptions, Gardner's ability to limit opposing passing attacks was evident, with only 3.4 passes per game coming his way.
Following Gardner in the rankings was Patrick Surtain II of the Denver Broncos, who garnered two first-place votes. Surtain, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, showcased his talents by giving up 54 receptions and three touchdowns on 91 targets. Trent McDuffie of the Kansas City Chiefs, Charvarius Ward of the San Francisco 49ers, and L'Jarius Sneed of the Tennessee Titans rounded out the top five.
McDuffie, an All-Pro slot cornerback, displayed his versatility by recording three sacks and forcing five fumbles in addition to his coverage skills. Ward, who made his first Pro Bowl appearance, led the league with 23 passes defended and returned an interception for a touchdown. Sneed, a key contributor to the Kansas City Chiefs' defense, was traded to the Titans after an impressive season where he did not allow a single touchdown.
As the 2024 NFL season approaches, fans can expect to see these top cornerbacks continue to showcase their talents on the field. With players like Sauce Gardner leading the way, the competition at the cornerback position promises to be fierce and exciting.
