Scots taxi firm axes disabled services after new law bans them from charging extra

Clare Welsh of Wellman Cars taxi company in Hamilton (UGC)

An award-winning taxi firm axed its service for disabled customers after new laws banned drivers from charging them more. Wellman Cars informed its passengers who suffer disabilities they would no longer be picked up.

But council bosses have read the riot act to firms and warned the move is illegal. It comes after a change in the law designed to help wheelchair users led to some cab companies threatening to take cars out of service altogether.

The legislation had made it clear that disabled people can’t be charged more for the same journeys as able-bodied customers. But Wellman Cars, based in Hamilton, told disabled customers they now wouldn’t be able to get a service due to the extra costs involved.

South Lanarkshire Council then emailed every cab company in the area to tell them they face prosecution if they follow suit. Wellman are Scotland’s Taxi Company of the Year, with director Clare Welsh picking up the award at a ceremony last year.

Staff corridors at Scotland's biggest airport crammed full of luggage

Staff corridors at Scotland’s biggest airport are being crammed full of luggage – with employees saying there’s nowhere else for it to go. Union bosses say the situation has created an “unsuitable and unsafe working environment” for staff.

This picture, taken at Edinburgh Airport yesterday morning, shows dozens of suitcases and bags lying abandoned in restricted areas. Staff say there is nowhere else they can store passengers’ belongings due to the huge amount of baggage passing through the airport.

There are so many suitcases and bags still to be reclaimed by passengers in the corridors that it is difficult for wheelchairs to pass. And the pile-ups, also said to be happening at Glasgow Airport, are being blamed on industry bosses and government officials.

The GMB union said their inaction has led to chaos following a boom in aviation after the slump brought on by the pandemic. Thousands more people are jetting off on holiday this summer compared with last year but the union says many firms have failed to take on more staff after paying people off during the pandemic.

The Govan schoolboy has been playing music since the age of eight - with his first gig at his dad's wedding in 2018. Since then he has played countless venues including The Garage in Glasgow, and is due to play in Ibiza later this year.

Callum told the Record he enjoyed his appearance at GBX's Marmaris weekend which was captured in the TikTok clips. He says the change in weather and getting to play a boat party for the first time were big factors.
