REGINA — Premier Scott Moe has announced a byelection for Feb. 15 to fill a vacant legislature seat in Athabasca.
The seat has been vacant since last August when former NDP member Buckley Belanger resigned from the provincial legislature to seek the federal Liberal nomination.
The riding, which is located in northwest Saskatchewan, includes the communities of La Loche, Île-à-la-Crosse and Buffalo Narrows.
The NDP has named current La Loche mayor and former MP Georgina Jolibois as its candidate and Darwin Roy is running as an independent.
The Saskatchewan Party has named former RCMP member Jim Lemaigre as its candidate.
Premier Scott Moe says it's important Athabasca residents are represented in the assembly during the upcoming spring sitting of the legislature.
"Our government will be highlighting our strong record of investments in the north, like the new elementary school in La Loche and our commitment to complete the Saskatchewan side of the Garson Lake road," Moe said in a statement.
