Sarson’s has brought back its famous Fryday campaign to save the nation’s chippies from closure, with free fish & chips on the menu for those willing to ‘chip in’ to help. Half of all chip shops in the UK at risk of closure within the next two years because of rising ingredients, energy and operational costs.
Sarson’s together with the National Federation of Fish Friers has identified that by visiting your local chippy just twice more per year, the nation could help stem the tide of chippie closures in just 12 months. Sarson’s is giving away one tonne of free fish and chips across the country this year. That’s 50 meals to be claimed every week, all year long.
Sarson's will give away 250 meals nationwide this week, and has unveiled a monumental golden chip statue marking the launch of its Fryday campaign and the mission to save the UK’s beloved chippies from threat of closure.
Anyone who snaps a picture of their favourite chippy meal with a Sarson’s bottle and uploads it alongside a receipt to www.sarsonsfryday.co.uk will be in with a chance of getting their Friday night chippy tea for free.
Andrew Crook, President of the National Federation of Fish Friers and Fish & Chip shop operator said; “Fish & Chip shops are so deeply entrenched in British culture and history, the thought of them disappearing from our high-streets and seaside towns all together is unimaginable, but given the increasing threat of closure, could soon become a bleak reality.
"From the rising cost of ingredients to the operational challenges that chippies face, our national dish is in danger.
"As a sector, we’re proud to see Sarson's taking action to preserve our beloved chippies. By participating in this campaign, and visiting your chippie just twice more a year, Brits can not only enjoy a free fish & chips but also contribute to the preservation of an industry that is an essential part of our heritage and a much-loved part of our local communities. Fish & Chips have always been a great value meal, but there’s no better value than a free chippy tea."
Vanni Cataldi, Marketing Director at Sarson’s’ Brand Owner, Mizkan Euro said: “Now in its second year, Sarson’s Fryday has one aim; to support the Fish & Chip shop industry during unequivocally challenging operational conditions - a result of which has seen many operators having to shut their doors and switch off their fryers in droves.
"So far, we’ve reimbursed hundreds of free meals to households who are feeling the pinch themselves, whilst putting money directly into the tills of the hard-working Chippy operators who keep this iconic British culinary institution alive.
"This summer, we plan to go one step further, by giving away one tonne of free chips to the nation. From Brighton, to Blackpool, Newquay to Newcastle, however Brits plan to splosh on the Sarson’s, we urge them to visit their local chippy…with the added incentive that their tea, might just be free! Together we can batter this crisis, one chip at a time.”
In addition to the nationwide chip giveaway, Sarson’s will be popping up in seaside locations across the UK, giving away unlimited fish & chips for one day only. Follow Sarson’s at @sarsonsuk to find out if there’s an unlimited Chip Drop happening near you this summer.
