England boss Sarina Wiegman names final Lionesses squad of record-breaking year

Sarina Wiegman has named her final squad of a memorable year as England prepare to face Japan and Norway in Spain.

Included in the squad are uncapped young Manchester United duo Maya Le Tissier and Katie Robinson while Alessia Russo returns after missing the October camp with an injury.

Captain Leah Williamson is still absent having also sat out last month’s 2-1 defeat of the United States at Wembley Stadium and 0-0 draw with the Czech Republic in Brighton. Niamh Charles and Jordan Nobbs also come back into contention.

There have been several calls for the United pair to feature in Wiegman's squad from several quarters but it appears she is keen to integrate them into the squad ahead of next year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Le Tissier, in particular, received praise from the England boss, who said: “We have eight months to get [them] prepared for the world cup.

“Maya has done well with the U23s and now Man United. This is an opportunity to gift them with a chance to impress.”

On Robinson, she added: “She’s done well, Sunday wasn’t the best game.

“She has some qualities she has shown, we wanted to bring her into a top quality environment to see what she can bring."

The Dutch manager didn't seem keen to elaborate on the ongoing rumours surrounding Aston Villa's Hannah Hampton and whether she will be included for country or club in the near future.

“It’s the same reason why I said in September, nothing has changed,' Wiegman said.

“It’s something personal that I don’t want to comment on. The door is always open, so when players perform, they have a chance to make the squad.”

Both games will be played at the Pinatar Arena football centre in Murcia with Japan up first, on November 11th, and Norway four days later.

Wiegman said: “These will again be two good challenging games for us which is just what we want and need at this stage. We will come up against one team in Norway that we know plenty about and who are building again under Hege.

"However, before then we have a tough match against Japan, who are bringing a different style of play which is a good preparation for the World Cup.

“We are hoping the conditions in Spain will help us to maximise our training as every session counts, along with the matches of course, in helping us to be ready for the World Cup. We cannot waste a minute and I am looking forward to getting back on the grass. We have some new players to look at as we know we have so much competition for places coming through.”
