England head coach Sarina Wiegman and forward Beth Mead have been nominated for this year’s UEFA player and coach awards.

The pair have been recognised in the wake of England winning Euro 2022 this summer, with the Lionesses defeating Germany in the final at Wembley to claim their first major trophy in women’s football.

Wiegman has been nominated for UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year and is on a final three-person shortlist, along with Germany boss Martina Voss-Tecklenburg and Lyon manager Sonia Bompastor.

Wiegman only took charge of England last September, but she has not lost a game since then and led them all the way at the Euros this summer. Voss-Tecklenburg narrowly saw her side beaten in the final, while Bompastor guided Lyon to Women’s Champions League glory last season.

Mead has made the final three of the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award and is joined by Germany’s Lena Oberdorf and Spain’s Alexia Putellas.

Mead enjoyed a brilliant Euros, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer and best player. Oberdorf impressed too, winning best young player.

Putellas cruelly missed the Euros due to a knee injury picked up on the eve of the tournament, but she performed superbly for Barcelona last season.

The award winners will be announced at the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League group stage draw ceremony, which will take place on August 25 at the Haliç Congress Center in Istanbul.
