Sarina Wiegman ‘absolutely happy’ as Lionesses extend unbeaten record with Netherlands rout

Sarina Wiegman was full of praise for her England side but insisted there was still work to be done after a 5-1 hammering of the Netherlands at Elland Road.

Against her home nation, Wiegman saw her unbeaten record since taking charge of the Lionesses extended to 13 matches and in impressive style, as England produced the most impressive result of her reign.

The visitors took the lead, through Lieke Martens, but Lucy Bronze levelled things up going into the break. Half-time substitute Beth Mead scored a brace, with her two goals sandwiched by efforts from Ella Toone and Lauren Hemp, as the Lionesses turned on their style.

There is now just one more Euro 2022 warm-up match to go, against Switzerland next week, before England play Austria on July 6 at Old Trafford in their opening group-stage match.

On the evidence seen at Elland Road they have reason to go into the tournament full of confidence, especially as Wiegman believes there is even more to come from the team.

“It was a very good game on the highest level, it is very nice to score five goals but actually we went behind for the first time and it’s how we reacted on that,” Wiegman told ITV.

“We needed to come back from not playing well and get the game to a high standard, so that was good.

“For us, it is just that we say when we lose we go with our plan and when we win we go with our plan - we don’t think we are there because some things didn’t go well and we have to improve that too, so we will start working on that on Monday.

“I am absolutely happy, such a high level game and of course the score says a lot, that is really good, the second half was really good. We are in a good place and still some things to improve.”
