Saraya on life after injury, AEW's UK show and leaving WWE’s Paige behind

This weekend’s AEW Revolution is set - as part of a stacked card - to play out a scenario worthy of a Hollywood movie.

British wrestler Saraya will take on Ruby Soho and fellow countrywoman Jamie Hayter for the Women’s Championship in a triple threat match.

For a woman who was told she’d never wrestle again, even the possibility of a new title reign sounds like the ending of an inspiring blockbuster.

Although, of course, The Rock has already produced one of those about Saraya - Fighting with My Family - with Florence Pugh immortalising her on screen.

Whatever the outcome of this weekend’s pay-per-view bout, the Norwich-born star can’t believe her luck. But she’s not taking it for granted - especially as she didn’t expect ever to be able to step between the ropes again following what doctors told her was a career-ending neck injury.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror ahead of the much-anticipated match she explains: “It was really strange. I just had that feeling that my neck felt good. I'd been healthy, sober, taking care of my body for over five years. I was curious to see where it was at. And that curiosity got the best of me.”

After a chat with Fulham FC boss-turned-wrestling-promoter Tony Khan she met with AEW doctors for extensive tests.

“They all came back absolutely perfect,” she told us. “I was blown away. It was like, ‘I've got a second chance here.’

“As with every other person in the ring, of course, any move could go wrong. But that's the same for everybody. I'm on the same level health-wise as everybody else right now.

“It just feels amazing to be able to eventually go out on my own terms, rather than to be forced out through injury.”

Saraya's AEW debut was explosive, with the 30-year-old quickly and firmly establishing herself as a heel, giving the women's division a burst of energy that fans strongly responded to.

As one of a number of big names to join AEW from WWE, where she wrestled under the name Paige, Saraya was happy to be reunited with friends and colleagues she’d not seen in a long time, although her former NXT mentor William Regal switched back to WWE not long after her return.

“I miss him. I always love this quote: ‘Never listen to people that try to belittle your ambitions, small people always do that. But the real greats make you think that you too can become great.’

“And that's just Regal. He’s a selfless human being who makes you feel like you can be as great or even better than him. He pushes you to that level. He's awesome. We're very lucky to have him in this wrestling business.”

But while Saraya has fond memories of her time at the other company, right now she doesn’t want to be anywhere but where she is. She tells us: “I'm always gonna love WWE, they're awesome.

“But Tony gives you a lot more wiggle room with creative. And he lets me do whatever I want outside of the company. He says as long as you come to work, you can continue working on your projects and all that kind of fun stuff.”

Top of the current list of ‘fun stuff’ for the wrestler is writing a memoir and she’s looking forward to giving fans an insight into her life.

“I always say I'm like a cat, I've lived nine lives. It's just bananas. People will understand me more once they read the book and see the real stories behind everything from childhood up until this point. I feel like people think they know me and the reality is they don't so I'm just here to really tell my story.”

She’s also got one eye on a new chapter where the other wrestling members of her family, the Knight wrestling dynasty, including her mum, dad and brother - who wrestles under the name Zak Zodiac - get a chance to get involved in the long-rumoured AEW UK show.

She told us: “I'm not 100% sure about the date yet but AEW will definitely be coming to the UK. I'm really excited. I can’t wait to be over there.

“I just hope we can incorporate my family somehow since we're coming over and people do know the Knight family. I think we could definitely get creative with them. And Zak definitely deserves it, I would just love it.”

AEW Revolution is on at 1am UK time on Monday (March 6). Fite.tv is streaming Revolution worldwide, with fans able to get access for $19.99, which works out at around £16. It’s also available on DAZN PPV.
