Sarawut steps down as Port coach after lacklustre run

Coach Sarawut Treephan.

Sarawut Treephan has quit as coach of Thai League 1 side Port following a string of poor results.

The 42-year-old announced his resignation on Monday after Port lost 2-1 at Buriram United in the league on Saturday.

Since the 2021-22 season resumed last month, Port have won only once in nine games in all competitions.

They were knocked out in the FA Cup and League Cup during the spell and are currently seventh in the league.

"I'd like to apologise for the bad results," Sarawut said. "The results were not what we had expected, so I have to resign to take responsibility."

Assistant coach Weerayut bin Abdulaman will take charge of the team.

Sarawut was moved "upstairs" earlier this season and replaced by Dusit Chalermsan.

But Dusit's reign lasted just months as Sarawut was appointed Port coach for the second time in November.

The Klong Toey club did well at the start of Sarawut's second spell as coach but have been stuttering after the New Year holiday.

Port have a good chance to bounce back when the host relegation strugglers Samut Prakan in the league on Sunday.

In Sunday night's Thai League 1 action, Khon Kaen United missed two penalties but still beat 10-man Muang Thong United 2-1.

Khon Kaen failed to score from the spot twice in the first 21 minutes.

Romulo Cabral finally gave the King Cobras the lead in the 35th minute after Port defender Lucas Rocha had been sent off five minutes earlier.

The referee initially awarded Khon Kaen a third penalty after Rocha's foul on Romulo. But after VAR review, it was determined that the incident took place outside the penalty area and Rocha was dismissed instead.

Henri Anier managed to equalise for Muang Thong after 51 minutes only for Romulo to score the winner in the 83rd minute.

Elsewhere, Chiang Rai defeated Nongbua 2-1, and Samut Prakan drew 0-0 with Prachuap.
