Golden Globe winner Sarah Paulson looks devilish in the images for new Netflix drama Ratched.
The new drama from American Horror Story and Glee creator Ryan Murphy is a prequel to the classic novel and film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
The villainous character of Nurse Ratched (Paulson) will take centre stage in the new series, with the role previously being played by actress Louise Fletcher in an Oscar-winning turn opposite Jack Nicholson in the 1975 film.
The series will tell the origin story of Mildred Ratched and how she came to work in an asylum.
The official synopsis reads: "In 1947, Mildred arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind."
It continues: "On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born."
Sounds perfect for Paulson, who has won acclaim for her roles in series such as American Horror Story and her turn as Marcia Clark in The People vs O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, for which she won both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe award.
The actress will be joined by a star-studded supporting cast that includes Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon, BAFTA winner Judy Davis, American Horror Story star Finn Wittrock, Pulp Fiction's Amanda Plummer, film star Jon Jon Briones, British veteran actress Sophie Okonedo, and Golden Globe-winning Hollywood legend Sharon Stone.
The drama series has released its first poster and first-look images which show off the attention to period detail and a preview of the actors in their roles, especially Paulson herself as the concerned and concerning Nurse Ratched.
Ratched season 1 will consist of eight episodes and a second run has already been confirmed.
Just what dastardly nightmares does Nurse Ratched have in store?
Speaking to Deadline back in 2018, Ryan Murphy called it "a feminist horror story, that a lot of women are involved with, so I keep waiting for them to tell me when something’s too much."
He added: "How did she get that way? What made her do that? How do you become a sociopath? Most people are not born that way".
Ratched is released on Netflix on September 18, 2020.
