Sarah Ferguson shares a poem for the Queen, saying her 'dearest friend' is now 'free'

Sarah Ferguson shared her latest poetry attempt with fans online as 2022 drew to a close last night.

The former wife of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, took to social media to post a tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II on New Year's Eve, following her ex-husband's mother passing away in September 2022.

Fergie, 63, referred to her former mother-in-law as her "dearest friend" in a handwritten note shared to her Instagram page - telling her followers how the late head of state will "remain in our hearts" almost four months on from her death.

The mum-of-two captioned her post "We will miss you always dearest friend. You remain in our hearts. Happy New Year," as she shared the poem alongside a photo of the Queen taken at Royal Ascot 2018.

In the poem, Sarah - who split from Prince Andrew in 1992 - writes: "As the primroses appear on the banks of Windsor so clear, new beginnings, new paths, new rainbows to see, you are tucked in our hearts even though apart – so welcome 2023 knowing you are free. Happy New Year."

The date September 19 2022 acted as a header for the verse - the day the late Queen's state funeral took place following her death on September 8.

"Thank you, Duchess Sarah! Very touching memorial," one of Sarah's fans commented underneath her poem, with another adding: "Much missed, but especially by those who knew and loved her personally like you."

Sarah and Prince Andrew, who share two children together, officially divorced in 1996 but it is believed Sarah maintained a close relationship with her ex's mother.

Fergie has also remained close to the father of her daughters, the princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and supported him in the wake of his legal issues over recent years.

The former couple both still live at the Royal Lodge in Windsor and last year Fergie stood by her former husband, as he reportedly called for his HRH status to be reinstated alongside being allowed to transition back into public life.

The younger brother of King Charles III resigned from public roles in May 2020, and his honorary military affiliations and royal charitable patronages were removed by Elizabeth II in January 2022, after he faced sexual assault allegations from Virginia Giuffre

Prince Andrew has always vehemently denied any wrongdoing and a lawsuit was settled out of court in February 2022.

"All I can say is that we’re happy with the way we are right now," Sarah teased when quizzed about her relationship with her ex in an interview with The Telegraph last year.

"We always say we are the most contented divorced couple in the world. We’re divorced to each other, not from each other," she added.

"We are co-parents who support each other and believe that family is everything. I’m proud of the job we have done together in bringing up our children and sustaining a strong family unit. Our bywords are communication, compromise and compassion."
